Founder’s Welcome

For over 65 years, I have dedicated my life to transforming the lives of children and adults with special educational needs. My journey in education began with teacher training at Whitelands College, London followed by 8 years of teaching in Manchester schools. It was here that I witnessed first-hand the challenges many children faced in traditional learning environments.

My passion for inclusive education led me to Bermuda, where I spent five years teaching in a special school, gaining invaluable insight into the power of tailored learning. Returning to the UK, my husband Paul and I – both having received special education training at the Cambridge Institute of Education – saw an urgent need for a specialist residential school that provided not just education, but a home where children could truly thrive.

in 1980 this vision became a reality when we acquired Overley Hall, a place that would become a beacon of hope, growth and opportunity for children with complex needs.

A Place to Belong, A Place to Flourish

At Overley Hall, we believe that every child and adult is capable of learning, growing and achieving when given the right support. Overley Hall was founded on the belief that education extends beyond the classroom – that well-being, independence, and a sense of belonging are just as important as academic success.

Nestled in a peaceful rural setting, Overley Hall offers a calm, nurturing environment, balanced with access to local amenities and enriching experiences. Our residential and learning spaces are carefully designed to provide:

  • Specialist teaching tailored to individual needs
  • A safe and supportive community
  • Opportunities for independence and life skills development
  • Holistic education that nurtures both mind and spirit

An Ongoing Commitment

Sadly my husband, Paul passed away in 2008 and I have since remained the sole Proprietor of Overley Hall. I remain actively involved in the day-to-day running of Overley Hall, ensuring that every child and adult receives the same care, attention and opportunities that inspired my journey in education.

There are 24 children from 9 – 19 years old at Overley Hall and Wellingtonia Children’s Home. We also have a purpose built adult’s home within our estate, The Woodlands. Our adult home continues to nurture our ex-pupils into an independent adult life.

The Overley Hall estate now includes Overley Hall School, Wellingtonia Children’s home, the Lodge and Adult Care Services – Woodlands.

I hope our website gives you an idea of our very special ethos.
